The are many ideas out there for a kitchen herb garden, and the one thing that makes it work is sunlight. If you have a area that gets direct sun for at least five hours of the day then you can try, if you get six hours then you will succeed.
Soil is another factor that determines success as herbs like rich well draining soil, and by rich we mean lots of organic material for the herbs to get their nutrients from. I make soil blends and when I say lots I put lots of everything not just plain compost.
A really cool gift this year would be a product which we have our hand in, we supply the growing medium and the magic seeds covering. This product is a mini passive hydroponic kit which when combined with a old 2L bottle makes a brilliant little planter that requires very little attention. Check it out
